Fribourg
is a city of around 40,000 inhabitants located 32 kilometers (about 20
miles) from Bern, Switzerland's capital. With its position on the
cultural border between the German-speaking and French-speaking regions
of Switzerland, it is naturally a bilingual city.
Fribourg has
preserved a medieval character unlike that of any other European city,
with its beautiful Old City area on the banks of the Sarine River. Among
the attractions are the Saint Nicholas Cathedral and other magnificent
churches, bridges, fountains and the ruins of the old city wall.
Fribourg also offers several museums, including the Museum of Art and History and the Jean Tinguely-Niki de Saint Phalle center.
In
the summer, Fribourg hosts the Festival Belluard Bollwerk
International, the Jazz Parade Festival, the International Festival of
Holy Music and the International Organ Festival.
Fribourg is also known as a prime location for sampling some of Switzerland's best food and wine.
Cultural
destinations in the Fribourg region include Avenches, Bern,
Estavayer-le-Lac, Gruyères and Morat, while places such as Charmey and
Schwarzsee offer possibilities for extraordinary outdoor activities.
